BN History
Today I am proud to say work for BNSF as a conductor out of Galesburg, IL. I grew up in the seventies as a child just a block from the former Cicero, IL classification yard. I still hear the cars whistling down the hump and crashing into other cars in the bowl. All that is left of those days is East End tower. That tower's days are numbered.
The Cicero yard was rebuilt by the CB&Q back in the fifties as part of a massive infrastructure project to speed up operations on the CB&Q system.
The history of the BN book by Bill Yenne is another great book that I have added to my library of railroad history. The jacket cover is excellent. I like the former roads emblems that came to make up the BN of the last century. Some how the SP&S was left out on the cover.
That was another vital part of the BN. It was a joint venture between the NP & GN that made major connections for both railroads into areas of Oregon, Washington & down the high line into California with run thru service with the Western Pacific.
Another fallen flag now absorbed by the only railroad left in the United States with its original name. The Union Pacific.
This book is a great dialogue of the former Burlington Northern Railroad. If you can get a hold of copy of the book. It would make a great addition to any rail historian’s library.
