Decent Hardware Lifted By The Best Mobile OS Bar None. Try It, Love It!
OK, this comes from the standpoint of someone who has owned amost every Palm smartphone since they started in the game with the Treo 270. I have barely used other makers' offerings but make no apologies as this family of products have a unique grasp of how humans interact with handheld computers. Basically, to this biased user, Palm/HP have come up with another winner. The size and shape of this phone is a strange point: some years ago I compared a few of the gizmos in my office - my Treo, my boss's whatever-his-smartphone-was, someone else's iPod: our verdict was that there is a definite size and shape that all makers are moving toward, as it just fits in the user's hand/pocket/life. Apple could be said to have led the charge away from that with the slab design, and most others have followed. I still think the right size is the right size, so thumbs up to Palm here. The shape is lovely in the hand, the "Zen pebble" updated with Gorilla Glass, all slick black without the former brightwork to detract. Yes, I agree with the tack taken. The screen is plenty nice enough, with good detail. It is smaller than an iPhone's, but why do I have a laptop if not for more detailed viewing of images? The video playback is a bit variable, but is usually up to snuff. once again, I only need a taster if out and about, then can see the vid in full detail once home. In other words, it is all good enough without blowing one's hat or socks off. Sound quality is fine, no better than most, I daresay. Reception can be an annoyance, with my wife's boring boring Nokia holding onto a signal on O2 where I sometimes cannot (that said, she prefers my phone in many ways to her own, despite being a smartphone-phobe). Battery life is fair to middling, not as bad at all as some I've used and dealt with. I recharge every night without fail and top up periodically through the day, which is easier than one might think. Why? Touchstone. The charging solution Palm's developed is streets ahead of anyone and everyone else. There are no wires to connect, just a small flat stone with a slant to it thatyou rest the phone atop. Magnets deal with the positioning and stop the phone slipping off and restyling itself on the floor. Magnetic induction then generates power within the casing of the phone to recharge the battery, a full charge taking about 2hrs from flat. I have Touchstones in a few places around the house, others keep one on the desk, etc. Anywhere you sit near a power outlet regularly can ward off the spectre of dead batteries, charging the phone for the same effort level as simply resting it on a table. Full marks to Palm again, a world-beating effort here. I could go on to discuss the Gecko technology behind why the Touchstone sticks remorselessly to almost any surface without glue and can be kept at max stick for a lifetime, but that's what salesmen are for... Check the website. I'm a fan. Let's leave it there. So, why do I stick with a phone that seems to have only middling features, with nowhere near the app count of the opposition? Answer - the operating system. webos is a revolution. This review must be cut short here, alas, but pick up a Pre Plus or Pre 2 cheap on eBay and try it. It lets you be you. No need to be a geek to grasp it, nor a boffin to exploit it fully. It is the OS for humans, as Palm has always provided. With webos, they excelled themselves. Can't explain it - just go try it. You'll love it too. It's the best there is. 'Nuff said.

    Logitech K480 (920-006342) Keyboard
    10 June 2017
    Three Good Keyboards In One
Having bought another tablet keyboard, I was disappointed that it felt so stiff and was too cramped for my big hands. It was light and small, but not much fun to actually use. The Logitech K480 was one of the other choices within a reasonable price band, widely available second-hand. It is a piece of cake to set up, being almost as quick as the dedicated keyboard my tab was designed to use. The stand channel allowed almost any tab or phone to work along with it too. The three device pairing dial made it fantastically useful, pairing with my tab, my phone and my wife's phone too. No problems with connections were experienced ever. The key action is a delight, reminding me of my old Thinkpads, which all had stellar keyboards. The size and shape of the keys matches my training and prejudices too, in that the delete key is large enough to strike without looking, etc. So, why not 5 stars? It is too heavy and a bit too big/thick to become your first-choice for mobile typing - I left it on my desk. The batteries are standard non-rechargeables where a properly designed lithium ion powerpack would have saved size and weight. The on/off button would be far easier to reach on the top face, not the bottom. I think that is it. As long as you can keep it in one fixed location it is a delight. Shame, though - your mobile devices thus become immobile...
