The Lived Experience of Jim Crow
4 of 5 found this helpful During the Jim Crow era in the deep south, African American's were not allowed in many whites-only businesses. Naturally, this hampered travel, especially for those for whom travel was a necessary part of their daily lived experience. The "Green Book," now immortalized in cinema, was a vital part of this reality, directing motorists and travelers to those businesses that would serve them.
I purchased this book for my students, many of whom have never considered the challenges faced by a significant segment of our past. In its pages one will find evidence of a history that, unless remembered, will continue to exert an influence in the future. Lest we forget the dangers of longing for an idyllic past, one which discriminated against African Americans, such books are necessary as reminders.
