Simply a phenomenal game.
Squaresoft and Enix did some absolutely amazing games back in the 2000s. For Enix this was their crown jewel. I played this game completely randomly as a kid as rental from a video store and I absolutely loved every second of it. Every time we'd go there I'd hope to get this for rent as well as Star Ocean 2 both of which only had 1 copy for rent. And Super Smash Bros. which had like 8-10 copies but was always sold out. Its been 12 years and i finally get this damn game here from ebay.
First off the music is done by Motoi Sakuraba. If you know that name then you know how absolutely epic his music is. Words cannot describe how good his pieces are. They are definitely best for RPG settings.
The game itself doesn't have a really big plot to it. You play as Lenneth, a valkyrie who picks up dead people be they male or woman and training them up to send to valhalla. Like how a parent raises their child to one day kick out to the real world. That's you. The parent keep some though since, well you'll have to lol. All the characters die. Some more fantastic than others some more gruesome some just flat out die. Everytime you do a spiritual concentration you'll be wondering "Man who dies now?" or "Is there a dungeon I have to go to?"
Battles are where its all at though, after getting your characters decked out and awesome battles are carried out by orders and timing. Do you simply send everyone out to wail on the enemy until they faint? Or do you start with the spellcaster to knock them up with magic, use the archers to shoot at them in the air then the melee characters to charge em while they are down? Once you get a feel for some characters you'll have to make up battle plans, pressing buttons randomly could waste attacks and make you miss.
There is no money in the game. All items you get you make. You have this MP called Materialization Points. ...Its just that you Materialize all your crap. lol. You get MP through either story events or just turning items into MP some items sole purpose is to turn into MP. You use this MP to make your standard RPG things: healing items, weapons, armor, everything. Cause of this. you'll always have a TON of items but its alright. don't ever feel overwhelmed cause you're supposed to have a ton of things. if you don't need it now convert it to MP or just hold it for when you get a new character and give it to them.
I agree there is a lot of hype for this old game but to be fair, it deserves it. How many out there can honestly say that Megaman X is a BAD game? Or that FF7 was? The game is good. great even and if you can get it you should definitely play it.
I also agree that if you have a PSP then get that one instead cause its the same game but with more content even. But I've no PSP so that's 86 bucks for this game I had to spend haha. Which is oddly comparable for todays games with retail prices of 49.99 or 59.99 but most games today suck so whatever. haha.
Joking aside. If you want a great old school RPG with sweet battle system and customization. Well here's a game for you! ....Along with anything Disgaea related.

If you can't get an SP or DS lite, then this is your best bet no doubt!
This review is based on how it compares today rather than its heyday. Its a great product but with the superior GBA SP and even more superior DSLite you can play your GBA games a few different ways but the original model doesn't compare to the new ones that's all. Its still an AMAZING console backed by its outstanding library of games.
If there was a god among handheld consoles....it would be the DS lite. But not too far from it would be...GBA SP but not too far from that would be this, the GBA. Amazing library of games and if it was backlit like the SP and DSLite, I'd call it perfect along with those other consoles. As well as being the cheapest at this point.
Sadly GBA SPs and moreso DS Lites are pretty expensive still. But these normal GBAs are pretty inexpensive. So if you don't want to go for the others. You can't go wrong with this model. Perfectly sized for your hands, stupid amazing game library its damn near perfect. Get one if you want to get into the handheld games that the GBA had. But if you can really help it, get the backlit GBA SPs instead. Amazing console that's second only to the models with better lighting.

Love MegaMan Battle Network? This is the series for you and its GOOD.
When Starforce came out it was met with lots of hate by fans for 1) Being another "new MegaMan" and 2) Being too much like Battle Network
Yes this is a new type of MegaMan and it is very similar to Battle Network that some have called it Battle Network 7. I can only wonder what type of fan(s) have said this. Those who love Battle Network? Those who don't care for Battle Network at all? I don't know but this game was MADE FOR Battle Network fans AND made to be easier for non-Battle Network fans to try getting into. So I find it very unfortunate if those who loved Battle Network can't appreciate this new series that was mostly made for them. Its like getting a ice cream from from your fave seller then getting sherbet later. Its practically the same thing just slightly different. Yet gets all your hate. Starforce is an easier Battle Network. It's less complex and still stays very fun regardless.
Story
The characters you interact with have more relevance to the plot and you play as Geo Stellar, a boy who lost his father and is practically the complete opposite of Lan who is cheerful, energetic and has a strong sense of justice. Geo is melancholic, doubtful, and would rather mind his own business than meddle with anyone else. You play as a broken kid who, in time, learns to trust others and opens up to others in his adventure with an alien who he ends up merging with named Omega-Xis or (Mega for short). The human world is getting invaded by aliens who have connections to Geo's dad and the boy wants answers but has to fight in order to get those answers and stop the aliens from invading the planet in the process.
Battle System
Like Battle Network, this is an RPG. Geo plays differently than Lan/MegaMan entirely.
The grid is much shorter as you can only move 3 spaces horizontally. In BN this would mean you only have your back column while the enemy has every other space. However for Geo this is perfectly fine as he has a BLOCK mechanic and can defend ANY projectile attack. Physical attacks have to be dodged however. The buster works differently as well and I enjoy this the most of it. Instead of mashing the button to fire, you hold the button for rapid fire and instead of holding the button to charge, you just let it go and stop attacking and it auto-charges for you. Battles chips now called Battle Cards no longer have codes but no longer can you make Program Advances (not until Starforce 3 anyway). You still make a folder of 30 cards and in battle they are laid out in a 2x3 grid. All same name cards you can select just like BN or chips in the same column can be selected instead. They did keep a certain aspect from BN like the * coded cards now called Favorites. When making your folder you pick 6 to be favorites. These cards gain a white border instead of yellow and they ignore the 2 rules just mentioned. You can take 2 chips in a column and 3 white chips in the other slots if you so felt like it. There is no MB limit either so ANY card can be made as a favorite. Simple, and effective.
Geo also has a Lock-On feature as well as Shield, where he will zoom up close to the enemy for a point blank attack, very useful for swords when enemies are far away from you. Even though you have far less room to move in, you have those 2 features at all times that you can use if you need them making battles fun and fast paced just like Battle Network.
This is a great game and with 3 versions, each with a different form to use, get some friends to play!
