ROMEO and JULIET 1996 : NEW DVD
17 May 2016
Shakespeare and Luhrman's genius combine in a stunning assault
You think you know Romeo and Juliet? Think again. Prepare to be shocked by the raw savagery; to gape, wonder struck, at the glorious imagery; to be moved and held breathless by the passion; to be swept along by the music and to come away from seeing this film with an entirely new perspective on Shakespeare and possibly even on love and life itself. Yes. This film is that good... Their story is so familiar it's almost cliché: star-crossed love ends in tragedy. But the reason it's cliché-adjacent is that Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet is likely his most famous work. Over the past 5 centuries, it has been (and continues to be) performed in countless theatrical productions across the world: from multi-million dollar arena spectaculars to high school productions. Furthermore, in the last century, numerous film versions have also been created. Romeo and Juliet is so well known that even people who would declare they have never heard Shakespeare would likely recognise lines like "Oh Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo?" and phrases such as "a rose by any other name"... It's a story that's been told and retold so many times it could have lost its impact (and many interpretations of it have done just that) but Baz Luhrman's will simply blow your mind. The dialogue is still traditional Shakespearean English but that's where the familiarity with previous versions of Romeo and Juliet ends. Luhrman vision takes Shakespeare's centuries old words and story and hurls them into a post-modern world where the feuding families own rival mega-corporations, the Montague and Capulet boys form gangs who terrorise the streets of Verona in tricked-out hot-rods, engaging in violent shoot-outs if their paths cross (armed with guns with names like 'Long Sword' and 'Broad Sword'), where the Sycamore grove is a ruined proscenium arch on a desolate beach, where Mercutio hands out party-drugs and performs in drag... and yet, the love story, the purity, agony and ecstasy of Romeo and Juliet's tragic love, shines through the decadence, violence and hatred... like the delicate peal of a single bell heard within a maelstrom. The film is visually gorgeous to behold, perfectly cast, brilliantly scored and, of course, magnificently written. Let it move you. Let it change you. Let it remind you why you love, whom you've lost and what you live for. Feast upon it and enjoy.

Best surfing doco ever!
Step into Liquid goes beyond the usual content of contemporary surfing docos - endless footage of big wave riding and tow-in surfing that is breathtakingly impressive but does not do justice to the cultural origins, global enjoyment and spiritual significance of surfing. Step into Liquid sweeps the viewer across the length and breadth of the globe, from the monstrous waves at Cloudbreak to the freezing but perfect breaks of Ireland. It explores the varied and rich culture of surfing in surprising, deeply reverent and, often, heartwarming ways... Whether you’ve been a part of The Search for decades, or are still mastering the ability to stand on your board, Step into Liquid is a must-watch.
NEW CAMELBAK FLASHFLO LR HYDRATION PACK OUTDOOR SPORT RUNNING BACKPACK TRAVEL
17 November 2016
Such an improvement on the old 'round bladder' design I used to have...
This design, with its elongated horizontal water bladder, is far superior to the old Camelbak lumbar hydration packs that had the old 'round' bladder design. The main benefit to this improvement is that, when the reservoir bladder is full, the new flashflo pack wraps comfortably around your hips and sits much more tightly against your lower back when cycling; unlike the old design which used to jut out and away from your back when the reservoir was full, which not only looked ungainly but furthermore moved ('bounced') uncomfortably when one had to jump a curb or swerve to miss an obstruction or pot-hole (Adelaide cyclists will know exactly how often we endure this on our roads 🙄). The new flashflo Camelbak design fits much more snugly, even with a curvier female hip/back, which results in much less oppositional movement when performing common cycling acrobatics. I'm not a runner, but I imagine this would also be of great benefit to people who wear it for running. Another great improvement of this Camelbak flashflo lumbar hydration pack from its predecessor (of about 10 years ago... I look after my cycling gear, I don't update it often!) is the colour: my old pack was a variety of light and dark greys and, though it did have some reflective piping on some of the outside seams, it was overall dark and muted in appearance which - given I spend half my time when cycling on the road trying to be visible enough to motorists that I don't die - it was not only less safe but also looked quite odd when paired with my hi-vis riding attire! The new Camelbak flashflo lumbar hydration pack is a beautiful bright Aqua/green with acid green (fluoro) zips and extra reflective piping and tabs, which is not only safer in my opinion, but actually looks better mixed in with my other bright riding gear. The main waist clip is still dark grey and the strap to the clip itself is light grey, but overall the pack looks bright and vibrant. My only criticism so far is that the reflective 'loop' sewn onto the front of the pack is at the bottom of the outward facing front pocket. Of itself, it adds extra reflection for safety, so that's fine. But it is also listed as a 'bike light loop' that you can clip a safety light to - which makes it being situated low on the pack only sensible if you ride with your torso essentially parallel to the ground - which I do not. Also, the 'loop' is big enough that it allows my Serfas tail light to bounce around as I ride, and I'm concerned the (rather expensive) light might one day come off as I'm riding... so I've taken to clipping my light onto the top of the flap on the front pocket, eschewing the 'light clip' feature and just letting the reflective tape reflect. This might not be a problem for someone with a different brand/style of rear light, and as far as criticisms go, it's a pretty minor one! However, less minor, is the lack of information in the swing tag about whether the reservoir, hose and mouthpiece are BPA free was frustrating. Deuter manage to include that info with their hydration pack, so take note Camelbak... All told, the new Camelbak Flashflo Lumbar Hydration pack, in the bright blue, is a winner. It works for me for cycling and I'm sure it'd be great for running too - which I'll never know because I consider running a masochistic form of self-flagellation, probably because I'm terrible at it, but I hear some people love it, so more power to them! - either way, I think it's worth the price and I'm really happy with mine!
