Fun Vintage MIDI Sequence Recorder
This is a fun vintage MIDI sequence recorder, from late 1985.
It has its quirks, and isn’t super-easy to use as an editor - but it works well as a recorder. Good value for the price, compared with modern hardware that’s available.
There are two tracks - you record sequences on track 1, either in real time or step mode, and then transfer them to track 2. You can then overdub additional sequences and ‘bounce’ them onto track 2.
You can record and overdub up to 16 channels and bounce them each onto track 2, one by one - one for each MIDI channel. So in theory, it can sequence a fair number of hardware units or sounds on a multi-timbral unit. But it may be a bit hard to do too many channels, as it’s challenging to edit once you’ve done a recording.
You can also delete the recording of a single channel (which you can’t do on the similar QX7 model that came out a few months before the QX21 - hence why I would recommend the QX21 over the QX7), which is good.
It’s easy enough to work out how to use it, based on the instructions in the manual and some trial and error. There are a few videos available online too that provide some tips.
I enjoy it a lot and have fun making more simple songs on it.
