The game has a good story no matter which side you choose. The only thing is you never really get the whole story unless you know which characters to send on the battlefield or if you look it up somewhere online. If you don't trigger all the cut-scenes you might find yourself lost as far as the story line goes.
The card based game-play could have been done a lot better. The monotone voice that tells what "phase" it is can put you to sleep and the rolling of a die is just numbers that appear on the screen. Visually the card based game play is boring. It is simple though which can be a plus for a few but a curse for others.
The graphics are as wonderful as ever. You can't not like the graphics of the Phantasy Star Online Series. The music is also great as always.
Even though the card based gameplay could have been done better it is a fun game, if you can get yourself online with a private server you are in for a whole lot more fun than if you stay offline.

Awesome Old School MMORPG...
This game is one of the best games out there. Yes, it is considered a MMORPG, but it has an offline mode and the only Massive multi-player part is the lobby online. Once in game online there are only three other players other then yourself.
While offline you can either go through the story in one player mode or you can multiplayer with your friends using split screen play.
There are four levels of difficulty. These are, in order, normal, hard, very hard and Ultimate mode. The creatures you fight are the same in each level, but they get stronger with every level. Except for when you get to Ultimate mode, it is, for a lack of a better term, an Ultimate challenge. The creatures change in appearance and the strength jump is higher then the other levels.
Along with the four difficulty levels there are four "stages" to go through during the story. They are, in order, Forrest, Caves, Mines, and ruins. That's just episode one. Episode two has four "stages" as well. They include VR Temple, VR Spaceship, Control Center, and Seabed.
The last bit to be noted is there are also quests you can do besides the main story. These quest bring forth new challenges that the man story line do not. Some quests are only available online but others are available both offline and online.
