Simple solution to a damaged sump drain thread!
The tap is sufficiently tapered to allow it to pick up squarely on the old, damaged thread. Once the tap starts to bite, it cuts quickly, backing off every half turn to break the swarf. I was concerned that swarf would end up in the sump, but no matter how long you leave the sump plug out there always seems to be a little dribble of oil, and this brought the swarf out with it. The re-cutting of the thread took less than a couple of minutes, meaning that jacking the car up, securely placing it on axle stands, getting it off the stands and refilling the oil were the lengthy parts of the job. This kit is highly recommended. I was concerned about getting the die aligned with the old thread, but the taper means the tap simply screws in squarely before it starts to cut. To conclude, if you have a problem with a stripped or damaged sump drain thread, this tool is the simple, easy to use and cost effective answer.
