Doctor Who - The Time Meddler
I mainly bought this dvd because i like the old hartnell stories of doctor who, but didn't recall ever seeing this one.
Anyway i'm very glad i bought it, the extras on it are pretty interesting, and the story is solid, the acting waivers a little at times as do the flimsy sets, but that's part of classic doctor whos charm.
The story involves The Doctor, Stephen and Vicki exploring northumbria, 1066, and discovering another time lord (then referred to as Gallifreyans) known as "The Monk", the doctor has never met him before proving it isn't the master in a prvious life (as we all know from later stories the doctor and the master were at school together so to speak).
This story has many "firsts" for doctor who. it is the first time we find out the TARDIS isn't unique, the first time we hear of the doctors race/home, the first time the story takes a pseudo-historical turn, meaning unlike the historical stories before it, the historical story of this one is in the background more towards the scifi elements involved.
This has some subtle humour and some really funny lines.
Steven Taylor : "I've seen some spaceships in my time, admittedly nothing like this, but... what does this do?"
The Doctor : "That is the dematerialisation control, and that over yonder is the horizontal hold. Up there is the scanner, those are the doors, that is a chair with a panda on it... Sheer poetry, dear boy! Now please stop bothering me!"
and later on
The Doctor : [The Doctor finds a Viking helmet, but Steven still doesn't believe that they have time travelled] "What do you think it is, a space helmet for a cow?"
All in all a great story and worthy addition to any whovians dvd collection 4**** out of 5
