Classic
Cruelty, abandonment, mental illness, catastrophe. What's not to love?

As psychologically, philosophically, and spiritually enlightening as a novel can be.
The book starts slow, and like many Victorian novels it takes a few chapters to get used to the rhythm of the language. But once I did, and once I fell in love with a few characters, I found it so gripping I could barely put it down. George Eliot deserves her reputation for being psychologically, philosophically, and even spiritually astute. Her complex understanding and portrayal of how characters affect one another, how personality drives decision-making, and how the decisions we make in turn affect families and communities is illuminating and riveting. Her portrayal of Maggie Tulliver's aunts and their husbands will make you laugh even as it makes you angry and sad. This is a wonderful book.
