What a good deal
This was a well-priced DVD purchase, and provided hours of enjoyable viewing. Times have changed; the pace of television police procedurals has accelerated, but the charm of early episodes on The Bill remains.

Somewhat abridged, but still enjoyable
This BBC production of Dickens' "David Copperfield" has wonderful actors, is well paced and enjoyable to watch from start to finish.
The bad characters are not so truly bad, or so many, as those depicted in the novel, but this it no doubt makes it acceptable family viewing. Key characters and plot lines are removed to allow the entire story to be told in three hours. I particularly missed Traddles, the reappearance of Miss Murdstone as Dora's chaperone, and Copperfield's own struggle to learn shorthand. Towards the end of the production both the events and their chronology are altered to make the telling of the tale more episodic, and a number of my favourite incidents are left on the cutting room floor as a consequence. From time to time the observant viewer will notice various period incongruities; furniture particularly, but also clothing and signage.
But that's the worst of it. And, believe me, it doesn't detract from the enjoyment this quality three hour production offers. I've watched it three times since it was first released. On the two most recent occasions (ten years apart) I've intended to watch one ninety minute episode each evening, and in both cases I've felt compelled to watch them back to back. You will too!
