Worked and then subscription ended

I initially purchased this product and installed it successfully on my MacBook. It worked well until 3 months later now and it’s letting me only use Office in view-only mode and is telling me I need to activate my subscription. I have already thrown the packaging and code away at this point so I’m screwed out of $100 and have to buy it from Microsoft.
