Fantastic iconic film with superb aerial views too
Many cameo cold-war characters and plotlets are set against the gathering cataclysm. Peter Sellars plays many of them; black humour at its best. A commie hating airbase commander launches his wing of strategic bombers loaded with H-bombs to Russia and fixes it so only he knows the recall code. Unfortunately the Russians have built a Doomsday machine that will destroy mankind if they are bombed - only they havent got round to announcing it yet. Mandrake guesses the recall code and his trying to call up the president from a payphone to give him the recall code for the H-bombers and being a dime short is brilliant. The aerial views of the B52s flying around 100 feet- i think its over arctic Canada and not Russia - are breathtaking. And the ingenuity of the Texan pilot who flies his damaged plane under the radar to an alternative target thereby avoiding the whole Russian air force sent to his primary targets by the Americans ... The relentless music of 'Johnny came marching' builds as the pilot rewires the bomb-bay release - damaged in a missile strike - and at the last moment he succeeds and rides his H-bomb down to the target with a Yeehaa!! Goodbye mankind - or is it, as back in the Pentagon Dr Strangelove is calculating the numbers of nubile females necessary to breed a replacement race with key male leaders down in the deep mines of Idaho...

Astrophotography on the Go
Excellent book showing how to get great astro-pictures through our light-polluted skies without killing yourself lugging 100kgs of kit backwards and forwards! Right on the button!

Philips VR550 VHS VCR
Whoever at eBay selected this item (out of 10 recent purchases) must have ESP capabilities. To start at the beginning, I bought it new/display/repaired to inexpensively and simply record The Apprentice if we were out, and Wimbledon during the day so we could see the whole matches and not just the highlights in the evening. It worked first time and the recordings were good enough for our screen. The only niggle was that the VCR control displays were too faint to see in daylight. Then the evening before your email for this review, it was rewinding when there was a sound like a football ratchet from inside the VCR and the rewind came to an abrupt stop. Now it wont play, record, or fast wind although it does load and eject tapes OK. So now I'm looking for the record of who I bought it from, and the hassles of 'do they deal with it' or do 'I have to go to Philips direct', and Where did I put the box it came in, and the postage is almost half its cost so what's the best thing to do - dump it? If it had lasted 3 years I'd have been happy, lasted one year and that would have been about OK, but just a few weeks is oh so not good..... Maybe our combined negative thoughts about the VCR that failed on the day before Wimbledon finals were powerful enough to trigger your selection process - just maybe. Libran-Scorpion
