Best F2.8 wide angle zoom for APS-C. Tack sharp and affordable!
i Can't say enough about how great this lens is. I was going to buy the Canon 17-40 F4L but for less than half the price this lens is faster with F2.8 thru the zoom range and just as sharp. If the Canon is sharper, I doubt the human eye could detect the difference. If you buy the Tamron new it has a six year warranty so it is built very well. I tested this lens by taking some high ISO long exposures of the Milky Way. If there is any test to how sharp a lens is, this is it. I was amazed at the results. Even at ISO 6400 the image was sharp, wide open at F2.8 and 17mm. Before this lens I was using the Canon 18-55 kit lens which was good enough for creating large professional prints. But this lens blows it away hands down. I have a Canon 300 F4L, which is obviously a different focal range, but the quality and sharpness of pictures is very close. The only drawback to speak of is that this is the non-VC version. However, in a wide angle lens that isn't as critical as it is for telephoto. It just takes a steady hand with fast shutter speeds or a tripod for slow shutter speeds.

Just What I Was Looking For
Pros: Nice image sharpness when shooting at "fine" setting and 12MP. Nice creative control with a wide variety of customizable settings. Settings are clearly outlined in the user manual which I found easy to understand. You can go the Kodak website and download pdfs of the standard manual and the advanced settings manual. This camera has amazing zoom like I've never seen on a non-DSLR camera. The price was great and I got lots of extras with it by purchasing on ebay. Overall I'd rate it as a great value for the price. Cons: The neck strap that it came with was kind of a joke. I took a strap from an older camera that I don't use anymore and it works fine. The lens cap does come off easily, however if you keep it attached/connected to the strap it's not a problem. The camera comes with the lens attachment. The batteries it came with don't last very long. None of the cons would have prevented me from buying this camera again as they are all very minor details. Other comments: In reading some other reviews before purchasing I found many people claimed the quality of photo shots were sub-par. I don't think anyone who made such claims really adjusted any settings or got to know the different functions. The other thing some complained about was the AA batteries. Many people prefer a different battery, but I'm from a different school of thought on this. I like that they are AA because you can buy good quality rechargeables in many different brands. Also, if you are on the road and forgot your battery, or the ones you have run out of juice, you can walk into any gas station and get replacements in a pinch. To me that is better than having a fancy custom battery and not being able to use the camera if you find yourself in that situation. And finally, the complaint that many have about this camera is simply that it is a Kodak. Kodak has developed a reputation over the years for being at the low end of the camera market. They do cost less than most other brands but the technology has come to a far enough point where they hold their own. This is third digital camera I've owned by Kodak and my experience with all of them has been great. I have a couple of friends who are professional photographers with fancy high end cameras. They have been amazed at some of the pictures I've taken with my low end Kodak. So my advice is, don't let the name brand decide which camera you will buy. I read lots of reviews on similar cameras from Nikon, Pentax, and Canon when I was shopping around which also had mixed reviews. I think the bottom line is that they are all good cameras if you learn the settings and find the one you are comfortable working with.

Good budget value but quality is lacking.
Pros: Lightweight and compact for easy storage in the car and attaching to a backpack while hiking. I love the ball head which is simple to use and easy to adjust and usually only available on more expensive tripods. The center shaft is removable so you can turn the camera upside down and take "worm's eye view" shots. Overall it is a good value. Cons: Quality/durability isn't all that great. The first time I used it one of the leg knobs broke. Upon further inspection I found the internal components that fell out were very cheap plastic. It took Dolica over a month to send me a replacement leg. I had to call and email a half dozen times before receiving it. They kept promising to send it, it wouldn't arrive as promised, and I would have to call or email again over and over again. Now I am very careful whenever extending or collapsing the legs as they seem very fragile. Other Comments: I purchased this brand at the suggestion of a professional photography website as a good value. If you are a serious photographer though, it would be worth investing a little extra money to get a better quality tripod as it will be more stable and most likely last much longer.
