The D7100 is the best DX format camera Nikon has ever made
The Nikon D7100 is a brilliant camera, just putting it out there from the start, brilliant. However it really is an enigma. Is it Nikon’s flagship DX camera? Why is it called the D7100 when it is much more than an incremental upgrade from the Nikon D7000? All interesting things to ponder when thinking about this camera; however none of that takes away from how good this camera is if you look at it as a standalone product. The Nikon D7100 is probably the best cropped sensor camera available. Now there are some interesting figures in the stats for the D7100. 24MP may seem like yet another rung on the ever climbing count of megapixels but 24MP is close to approaching the theoretical resolution of 35mm format film. This in itself makes the D7100 a landmark camera, but there is more. Another impressive feature of the sensor in the D7100 is that it captures more than one extra stop of dynamic range than the D300s, 13.7 stops for the D7100, and 12.2 for the D300s. That’s an impressive improvement and again goes further to producing photographs that come closer to emulating the quality of film. One of the things about Nikon that puts them above Canon in my mind is the handling of Nikon’s cameras. The shape of the grip and the materials you touch, the placement of the buttons and the sound of the shutter. Nikon have not disappointed with the D7100, it has that great Nikon sense of quality on the surface that extends below as well making this camera a very high end piece of kit. As well as vastly improved image sharpness the D7100 is capable for full HD 1080 30p video. You can even shoot at 1920×1080 60i. However my personal favourite is to lose a bit of the resolution and film at 1280×720 at a silky smooth 60p. The D7100 also features an inbuilt stereo microphone, a microphone-in socket and a headphone socket for monitoring audio while filming. For capturing all that HD video goodness there is also a dual SD card slot which is configurable so you could use both for storage or perhaps set up one for photos and one for video. These features combine make this camera a very capable machine for cinematography. In fact it has lead the marketing people at Nikon to coin the term HD-SLR, although I’m not sure this will catch on. High Definition Single Lens Reflex… Camera? Hmm. Unfortunately I feel the greatness that is the Nikon D7100 has been dampened by the constant rumours and speculation about the replacement for the D300s. I reckon that there are a lot of people holding out for a camera which may or may not arrive and that could ultimately hurt the success of the D7100 if it actually is the replacement for the D300s. The fact is the D7100 is currently the best DX format camera Nikon has ever made, with a massive 24MP and the ability to shoot HD video, weather sealing and durable magnesium alloy construction, it will stand the test of time and remain a very capable camera for years to come.
