Selector Infected Wixoss: Complete Series LE (Blu-ray Disc, 2015, 4-Disc Set)
07 April 2023
Expected Madoka. Got Mai-Hime.
I've long heard this show described as "Madoka with trading cards". Upon watching it, while I can see why people make the comparison, the plot is MUCH more similar to Mai-Hime, for better or for worse. Don't expect Yu-gi-oh going into this show. Outside of both shows revolving around trading cards, there are few to any similarities between the two. While Yugioh has epic multi-episode spanning duels, Wixoss' duels are very short and don't really expect the audience to know or care what's actually happening gameplay-wise. Wixoss treats its duels less as the centerpiece and more as a necessity to move the plot forward, always focusing more on the players' feelings during them rather than the game itself. The show itself takes a while to really get going, but I found it quite engaging once it got through the initial character setup and the pieces really started moving. I went in with fairly low expectations and found myself really getting into it by the end. Just be warned that the way this anime is titled can be confusing. Selector Infected Wixoss and Selector Spread Wixoss are very much two halves of a single 26 episode anime, while the two Lostorage series are essentially the "second season". Infected ends on a cliffhanger in the middle of the story, so there's not much point in watching it without Spread. Also, the box is nice.

Must be watched in the context of its time
Pretty good anime, although it suffers hard from the fact that it was SUPER influential when it came out. If you're watching this today, you'll feel like you've seen a lot of it before. It still has a few ideas I found charming (I had a dumb on grin on my face during the entire final battle of the season). Louise could be a bit grating early on, but develops well over the course of the series. I found the supporting cast charming, but wish they had more focus. But unfortunately this is a Geneon title. As you'd expect, the collector's art box is EXTREMELY high quality, but the DVDs themselves skimp out hard on bonus features. As usual, you get the textless songs, trailers for other anime, and that's about it. The box is VERY nice looking, though. The DVDs even have reversible covers to make the spins match the box's color scheme a bit better than the normal ones. Overall, it's not a bad watch. Just keep in mind that it was released in 2006.

Understand what the series is before watching it
I need to open this review with a warning: This anime is NOT a sequel to the original Comic Party anime (despite what the back of the box claims). It was a special animation project that was originally sold at Aquaplus' convention booths for fans of the Comic Party dating sim (which sold well enough to be expanded into a full series). As someone's who's played the original game, I can personally confirm that there are a LOT of scenes that rely so heavily on referencing events from the game that they'll be outright incoherent to anyone who hasn't. Not only that, but the show expects you to already know the characters. The original anime will help with that somewhat. However, you've got characters like Reiko who was a BL-loving fighting game fangirl who refused to cosplay feminine characters in the original game, but was turned into a very fanservicey cosplayer in the first anime adaption. She's now back to her game characterization, but anyone who's expecting this to be a follow-up to the first anime will just be left confused by the sudden change in character. She's far from the only character to suffer from this. Trying to review the anime on its own merits is very difficult because of that. The animation is mediocre, but I appreciate that they used the OST from the game this time around. If you actually understand the nonstop in-jokes, the humor is pretty charming. The DVD bonus features are excellent, though. Since the show is based on Japanese doujinshi culture, there's a lot of stuff a western viewer wouldn't understand. The DVD menus do a very good job providing supplementary information. There's both a dictionary of doujinshi terminology and written in-character walkthrough of the steps a person has to take to prepare for a spot sale. There's even a timeline of the Comic Party franchise that helps give this anime a bit of extra context for those in Region 1. Overall, I'm not really sure whether to recommend this anime. It's very good at being a celebration of Comic Party for its fans, but I'm not sure what anyone else would get out of it. If you just want to know what the franchise is all about, stick to the first anime.
