Good Debut of an enteraining filmmaker
Kevin Willmott (co-writer of CHI-RAQ & writer/director of JAYHAWKERS and C.S.A.: THE CONFEDERATE STATES OF AMERICA) made his directing debut (co-directing with Tim Rebman) with this low-budget indie based on his play about his hometown of Junction City, KS and the infamous entertainment district that existed there for years. Set in 1968, it has a good sense of the period, and some nice perfomances from Queen Bey, Isaac Hayes, other actors from the Kansas City area and a cameo by Martin Sheen. A good African-American film to discover, especially if you've tired of slavery narratives or tales about getting out of the 'hood.
