Solas Words That Remain remains a classic
This line up of Solas was one of the finest groupings of Irish traditional musicians to play in one band. If you ever heard the Bothy Band, Planxty, Boys of the Lough, etc. you'll love this album. What is really wonderful about Irish music is its ability to change with the times. There are indeed many lovers of strictly traditional music, purists who want to hear the pure drop as it were, but there are many fine musicians who find that too restrictive. Solas falls into the latter category. Their re-workings of traditional tunes are incredibly energetic, rhythmically daring and masterful. Karan Casey's vocals are as lovely as you could want. John Doyle is one the finest rhythm guitarists you'll ever hear. Seamus Egan plays every instrument well and Paul Williams is as good a box player as you could ask for.
If you've not heard this album I'd urge you to give it a try.

Strapped: The Origins of Tow-In Surfing
A good overview of contemporary big wave surfing. Covers the reasons for going to smaller strap in boards and Zodiac leading to jet ski towing. A nice cameo with Greg Noll explaining why paddling into big waves was self limiting.
The DVD has some truly awesome film of truly scary giant wave riding. You cannot be anything less than in awe of the guts these guys have. 60' plus waves, pounding elevator drops down wave faces. Angry looking barrels ready to swallow the rider, WOW!!
The only reason for a not excellent grade is the music. I just found the music choices less than complementary to the action.

SALVO'S PROCOL HARUM REISSUES ARE THE NEW TOUCHSTONE
I've owned this album in either vinyl or cd since its release in 1969. It's one of my desert island albums. This reissue by Salvo is a pure revelation and a phenomenal piece of remastering. I have a nice simple stereo system, a rebuilt Heathkit AA-30 tube amp, a home made preamp and a pair of Tannoy studio monitors. It's a pretty forgiving set up, not hard edged or hyper critical, but my oh my I'm hearing details in A Salty Dog that I've never heard before. The sound stage is impressive the overall feel transparent and so much space and air inside of it all. A real feast for the ears and soul. I'm going to get the Salvo reissues of Procol's first as well as Shine On Brightly.
