Warren Zevon and REM in the garage 198?
1 of 1 found this helpful Basiclly the document of a jam session, by some accounts a fairly liquid
one, this recording finds Warren Zevon and REM crashing through a bunch of blues standards and one or two other interesting covers. Recorded during or after(accounts differ)the sessions for Zevons Sentimental Hygine release (on which REM provided backup on most of the basic tracks), Hindu Love Gods has the unhinged feel of boys after school, up to no good.
Robert Johnson, Willie Dixon and Muddy Waters all are represented here by well known tunes as are the artist then known as Prince(an instantly recognizable "Rasberry Beret")and Woody Guthrie. The other standout is a mostly acoustic take on the Ullman/Franks tune "I'm a one woman man".
The feel throughout the record is raw and jam like; although competently
recorded by the well regarded Niko Bolas. Warren Zevon fans take note: this
is Mr Zevon in Full Rock Mode; he plays electric guitar only here(it seems),
and some of his lead licks will remind you of where the Excitable Boy handle
came from.
