When it arrived, the turning ring was stuck. The seller said keep it and returned my payment. He said I can do whatever I want with it. I decided to chance lubricating the ring with 3 IN 1 oil. It applies like a penetrating oil, but leaves a coating for continued lube and corrosion protection. I applied the oil using a Q tip. Lightly! It freed up the ring and it's an excellent PZ filter. I'm keeping this seller as a FAVORITE!
This review is coming from the perspective of an owner of several of Canon's best known L-series lenses, including it's bigger brother the 70-200mm f/2.8L IS, and the 85mm f/1.2L, 70-200mm f/2.8L non-IS, the 80-200mm f/2.8L "magic drainpipe", and several other of Canon's best.
Assuming you are already familiar with Canon's L-series lenses and their "typical" performances in terms of color and sharpness, etc I will try to keep this brief and only touch on the topics an experienced amateur photographer would care to note. I am using this lens on a crop body camera (1.6x effect on focal length).
The biggest news with the release of this lens is the image quality. It overshadows the addition of IS (image stabilization) to this lens. It is easily the best IQ zoom lens Canon has ever manufactured regardless of focal length, and easily outperforms the IS versions of it's bigger brother the f/2.8 in terms of image sharpness, not a bit of softness anywhere in the frame. It appears to be razor sharp from edge to edge of the frame from wide open (f/4) all the way up to where diffractive effects start to dominate (f/11) irregardless of the focal length. Multiple independent tests confirm the lens is at least competitive with if not better than several well known "good" prime lenses. This could easily be considered a no-compromises optical quality lens and the fact that it is affordable and a zoom makes this an amazing achievement, a real boon to discerning photographers everywhere.
I will rank the IS as the "second" most notewothy feature of this lens. Canon claims the IS (a new generation design) is capable of up to an equivalent 4-stop improvement, I believe this is more like three stops. Nevertheless the IS brings out the full potential of the 70-200mm zoom format but unlike it's bigger brother the f/2.8 this lens is razor sharp everywhere a discerning photographer would care to use it. The IS works fine; as you know you cannot expect it to perform miracles and it will not help with action shots in low light where the shutter speed is insufficient to stop the action.
The lens is also weather sealed - not all L's are - which is another upgrade and another reason your investment in this lens will hold it's value both in terms of dollars and preserving the quality of your images.
The release of this lens caused a major shift in my lens carrying habits as it is now my "walkaround" zoom that I pair up with my Canon 17-55 f/2.8 IS. I do most of my shooting with this lens out of doors in daylight conditions and for the action sports shooting I do (soccer, water action at the beach) f/4 is more than enough aperture under these conditions to stop action and deliver sharp images. You will not be able to obtain the razor-thin depth of field the f/2.8L can deliver, but in my case I could not obtain the shutter speeds at ISO 100 to use f/2.8 anyway -- I had to stop down to f/4 -- which is what this lens is wide open. And because this lens delivers sharp images wide open and weighs less than half of my f/2.8L IS, the 2.8 stays at home during the day.
In summary a great lens and working evidence of continuous improvement in lens design and manufacture. I am glad to be able to own a copy of such a fantastic piece of glass in my life time and know it will deliver years of pleasure. I also know that when I tire of it, it will sell for 80 to 90 percent of it's original value like all the other top performing L-series Canon lenses.
Enjoy!
