    It's a Condition/Strange Language by Romeo Void (CD, Jul-2007, Wounded Bird)RARE

    It's A Condition, By Itself...
...is an excellent debut record from one of my new favorite bands from the 80s. The problem I have with this release is that someone packaged it with Debora Iyall's first solo effort, which was disappointing from the production values to the lyrics. I won't go into that too much; suffice to say that I couldn't finish listening to it, and probably won't transfer it to my iPod. It's a Condition, on the other hand, is a great record. I couldn't find a copy on CD for under $50 when I looked, which is why I went with this copy instead.

    Comps are Usually Good Intros...
...to a band's work, and this is no exception. Romeo Void could easily be dismissed as yet another 80s band, but they had just a bit more than trendy marketability going on for them. At their best, they were brilliant, and even at their worst, they still played their own instruments and worked together as a group. Debora Iyall--with her ordinary voice, restrained vocal chops, and lyrics that could go from smart to sexy to vulnerable in the same line--also just happened to be a good-looking plus-sized Native American woman, which either made her a social rebel or unmarketable, depending on how people in record lable offices looked at things. There was that saxophone peppering everything, just like so many other bands had in that era, but this one was just as likely to take a left turn into edgy jazz as it was to accentuate a ballad's mood. The guitar, bass, and drums usually keep to the rhythmic aspects, and rarely get flashy or hung up on pyrotechnics; and yet, from a musical perspective, they still manage to get adventurous in their own way, while still offering the prospect of the listener dancing on his or her terms. Plenty of their songs are catchy enough to randomly pop into your head, too. I dare you to not like this stuff!

brandy warmer with tea light and glass snifter
    25 May 2018
    Good Start
I ordered two of these tealight-based warmers, and they work fine, except for three small issues. Firstly, I'd have liked to see a design that accomodates different sizes of glasses. The bigger snifters that I have rest on the edges of the prongs; although scratching hasn't happened yet, it still seems possible. I can probably fix this with something on the ends, or perhaps by bending the tips outward so that the glass surfaces slide along a flat surface. I recommend this as an upgrade to the design: curl the prongs outward on at least the wider end, if not both; it will also look more interesting. Secondly, the tealight design is a bit flawed. As the candle burns down, the flame has a dramatically reduced effect on the glass. The solution is to swap out the tealight candle--easy enough--but I wouldn't mind being able to upgrade this part to something else. I'll go on the manufacturer's website or contact them to see if any other burner types are available separately. Finally, the photos showed rose-colored glass; both of mine came as clear. This isn't a major issue; I'd just have liked those rose-colored snifters. I've been having a lot of fun with warming up all kinds of stuff--brandy, slivovitz, cognac, gin, whiskey, and vodka--and then flaming off the fumes before sipping. I just need one of those barbecue lighters, so I can stop using my long wooden matches. At the end of the day, it was a good starter purchase, despite a few small gripes that I can work around. It's definitely worth the small price for each.
