First rate
Wonderful performances of mature works by Mozart, music doesn't get better than this.
Vladimir Horowitz : Horowitz plays Rachmaninov CD
23 January 2019
Bravo!
Benchmark performances of two of Rachmaninov's greatest compositions by one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century. In fact this disk makes me think he's a serious contender for "greatest", alongside Richter, and very few others. These are difficult pieces that I never appreciated properly before, in the hands of other performers, but Horowitz enabled me to appreciate them and put them on my playlist for heaven. Outside Richter, I never experienced so strongly the ability of truly great player to lift a piece from my "meh" list to my "must" list.
A Philosophy of Boredom (Paperback), Svendsen, Lars, 9781861892171

Philosophy as it should be
He says something interesting and profound things about boredom, and it's well worth a read! I'm hoping that applying his philosophy will make my life less boring, as well as making me less anxious abut being bored. His take home message, anti-Heidegger, is that boredom is not a quality of Being, just one naff thing you encounter in the world, like a cold, that you can do something about, or hope to go away. Unlike Heidegger, he uses straightforward prose, and examples, that are easy for the average reader to understand. He does use some quotes from Heidegger, but don't panic, he translates their meaning into everyday language (and then demolishes them...)
