The Physics of Stars by A. C. Phillips (1999,Paperback) Second Edition
12 October 2016
Good astrophysics text
This textbook is certainly compelling and contains a lot of information for its size, good introductory text into astrophysics for those with a undergraduate understanding of thermodynamics, quantum mechanics, statistical mechanics, etc. My only problem is that some of the hints/answers in the back of the book to the practice problems are incorrect, they did not thoroughly check those answers, though the hints will always be of some use in getting started. I also feel that Phillips makes certain approximations and equations that should have some more explanation, for example he may combine two equations that he lists into an approximate form, while the exact form is not there and would need to be rederived. Or he may draw upon formulas from other subfields without much explanation behind them, which is why as I said the equivalent of undergraduate introductory knowledge of all general physics fields would be helpful in fully grasping how those concepts are all applied to astronomical objects.
