Great selection of a great baritone's best work!
This 5-CD is a generous sampling of one of the 20th century's great baritones at an economical price. It has 78s of the young Gobbi from 1942 when his voice was at his freshest, other recital material that has not been easy to find on CD, and generous samples from his complete operas for EMI, including his excellent Tosca and Rigoletto with Maria Callas and his fine Simon Boccanegra. Although Gobbi was a great singing actor and a creature of the stage, recordings still capture much of his expressiveness and musicality, along with that instantly recognizable voice. If the rest of the "Icon" series is as good as this, I'll certainly get more of them!

Glad to finally have this great CD!
I have heard some of the recordings from this, and I am glad I finally found this lovely CD. Also, I was pleased to see that it was a sealed copy in great shape!

    Good reference about Fred Allen
I have seen criticism in some places about this book not being very funny, even though it's about a comedian. However, it is not meant to be funny, and if you understand that, I think you'll get more out of the book. This is a scholarly work about Fred Allen's radio career, not a nostalgia-fest. It is a terrific reference for those who want information about the programs, the performers and about the networks and ad agencies with which Allen had to deal. If you want laughs, you can get them by listening to Allen's programs and reading his books--Much Ado About Me, Treadmill to Oblivion, and Fred Allen's Letters. However, this book will tell you many details about the programs, and the circumstances under which one of America's great humorists created wonderful comedy for the ear and mind. As Steve Martin says, "Comedy is not pretty," and there is a lot of work behind good comedy. Allen was one of the hardest-working comedians ever, and this book shows what made that great work possible.
