The Stranglers Rattus Norvegicus: IV (CD) Album
    24 April 2025
Auspicious debut album by The Stranglers
The Stranglers' debut album, Rattus Norvegicus, released in 1977, is a cornerstone of the punk rock era. It showcases the band's unique blend of aggression, wit, and musical sophistication, setting them apart from their contemporaries. The album features a mix of punk energy and melodic complexity, with prominent bass lines, swirling keyboards, and sharp guitar riffs. Tracks like "Peaches" and "Hanging Around" are standout examples of their sound. The lyrics are often confrontational and provocative, reflecting the band's rebellious attitude. Songs like "Sometimes" and "Ugly" delve into themes of frustration and societal critique. The album's raw energy and unapologetic attitude make it a must-listen for anyone exploring the roots of punk rock.

This double CD covers their work from 1967 to 1974, featuring a mix of rock, progressive rock, jazz fusion, and psychedelic sounds. The album includes fan favorites and deep cuts, making it a great introduction for newcomers while also satisfying longtime fans. Some standout tracks include: "Dear Mr. Fantasy" – A classic, showcasing Traffic’s signature blend of bluesy rock and psychedelic elements. "The Low Spark of High-Heeled Boys" – A 11-minute masterpiece that highlights their progressive rock influences. "John Barleycorn" – A folk-inspired track that became one of their most iconic songs. "Gimme Some Lovin’ (Live)" – A nine-minute live version of the Spencer Davis Group hit, featuring Steve Winwood. Also, the big chart hits "Paper Sun" & "Hole in My Shoe". The compilation is an excellent introduction to one of the UK's most revered artists, which also spawned rich careers for Jim Capaldi and Steve Winwood, the two mainstays of the band.
The Feelies - Crazy Rhythms [New CD] Digipack Packaging, Digital Download

    The Boys With Perpetual Nervousness
The Feelies 1980 debut is a jittery, jangly, and deeply idiosyncratic record that helped define the American underground sound of the early ’80s. True to its title, the album is built on nervous energy and percussive experimentation. The band uses everything from claves and castanets to coat racks and shoes to create its twitchy, propulsive grooves. The guitar sounds are clean, chiming, and angular-think of 70's New York band Television’s precision with a geekier, more suburban twist. The guitars don’t dominate so much as interlock with the rhythm section in hypnotic patterns. Glenn Mercer’s vocal delivery is understated and nasal, often buried in the mix, adding to the album’s anxious, cerebral vibe. Absolute highlights include, "Fa Ce La" and "Raised Eyebrows" and a complete jittery, re-imagined cover of The Beatles "Everybody's Got Something To Hide Except Me And My Monkey" originally from The Beatles "White Album", "The Boy With The Perpetual Nervousness”, a perfect opener-twitchy, minimal, and oddly catchy. It sounds like its title. The album works superbly as a whole, from start to end. Great reissue in a beautiful Digipak with an excellent booklet containing a brief history of the band.
