Why, oh Why Such Tracks?!
1 of 1 found this helpful I have not built this kit yet, and don't know if I will. What prompts this review is the fact that the track assembly is absurdly complex and needlessly time-consuming and tiresome. Each link requires a four-piece assembly process, with each cleat assembled separately. If you have experience with this scale, you can easily imagine how tiny these individual cleats are, and how likely it is that some of them will fall victim to the carpet monster before the track is complete. This will leave you with obviously mismatched track links, which defeats the whole purpose of accuracy. I will build this kit if I can find aftermarket tracks that are better designed and don't waste my time with unnecessary minutiae. I'll update my review on build quality at that time if my memory allows. This is the first Meng kit I've bought, and will likely be the last, given the high level of engineering and more thoughtful assembly process of Tamiya products.

A (VERY LARGE) EXERCISE IN ANTICIPATION
1 of 1 found this helpful I received this kit less than two weeks ago, so this is a "first-impressions" review only. Because of the way Ebay has of completely ignoring scale in all searches, I mistakenly assumed I was buying the 1/48 scale version of this kit. My first impression upon opening the carefully-packed box was literally "Oh my god, look at this monster!" The kit was brand new and still had its plastic wrap, and I just had to open the box right away to see what a full-sized dive bomber looked like in a box. If you haven't had the awesome pleasure of inspecting a kit of this size and scale, you'll have a hard time recognizing some common components at first sight. I kept looking at these huge curved objects, trying to decide if they formed some part of the fuselage. I finally realized that what I was looking at was a pair of ordinary cowling covers, except that they were the size of the horizontal tail surfaces of an ordinary bomber kit. I mean, this sucker is big! But I'm glad it's so big, and I'm really excited about actually building it. I'm an older guy now, and my eyesight, which was always coke-bottle assisted, is now very happy to deal with parts that aren't the size of toothpick fragments. No fragile, minuscule details on this baby, no sir! Still, I'm planning to search out some metal landing-gear legs to bear the massive weight of the finished model. Also, they'll make excellent makeshift weapons if I need to hit a prowler over the head! This thing is going to be a project to take seriously, so I also ordered the same kit in 1/72 scale, just to give me an idea of how everything goes together. That one will be a casual build, with just the box basics and some painting practice to get my eye in for the grand opus. I'll fill you in on how the thing actually builds when I've got it at least mostly completed. I'm optimistic, though, because the Pro Modeler range has never disappointed me yet. They may be a generation removed from "state of the art", but they also represent some of the best values in larger-scale models you can find. Wish me luck!
