Philips DVP5982 does a solid job with video and sound
I must admit that I have just received a used unit which is about a year old. I was worried that it would not function or be quirky ... to the contrary. Though the unit is older, it had better reviews than the newer model ... why I do not know. I have used several DVDs and CDs in it so far and the video quality in 1080p upconverting is considerably sharper and crisper than normal DVD mode. In fact the 2x zoom mode in 1080p is about the same quality as standard 480i, which is a good way to fill my entire LG 37" LCD screen. In non-zoom 1080p mode the widescreen image is very clear and sharp. Though I am sure that bluray is sharper, I do not feel it has greater emotional impact ... strictly a discussion for videophiles or for people with 65" screens. It plays many difference video and audio formats, but I have not tested those yet. The standard discs tried so far have not skipped or hesitated, whether they were old or new or from the rental fleet (notoriously problematic). The sound quality on DVDs and CDs using AV cables through an older analog Harmon Kardon amplifier and JBL speakers is satisfying. I have not yet heard it using a digital cable through my newer Denon amp and NHT speakers, though I expect it will be excellent by comparison. Honestly, I have excellent eyesight and exceptional hearing, and though I can see and hear the difference in high grade equipment compared to a less expensive unit like this, I would suggest that this unit delivers at least 90% of the reproduction quality of a higher grade $500+ unit (I paid $45). Depending on seeing and hearing acuity, I suspect the average person would be hard pressed to tell the difference. Frankly, in the movie theater, while the sound systems are superb, I have noticed that the giant screen is often grainy and blurry... much, much more so than this unit delivers. I for one am glad to save the money by buying this unit and escaping technology overkill.
