our only may amelia
The book I read for my book summary was Our Only May Amelia by Jennifer L. Holm. May Amelia Jackson is a twelve year old Finnish girl that came over and lived in the United States of America during the late 1800’s. She grew up with seven brothers, Matti, Kaarlo, Wendell, Isaiah, Alvin, Ivan, and Wilbert. Her mother was pregnant, and was about to have her baby. The Jackson family lived along the Nasel River in what we know as Washington and Oregon. May Amelia was the only girl growing up along the Nasel River, besides grownup women. Since she had grownup with boys her whole life, she acted like one. May Amelia liked to fish, sail, and climb trees, and she wanted to be a sailor when she grew up.
When May Amelia’s birthday came, her Aunt Alice and Aunt Feenie came to visit her. Aunt Feenie gave her a porcelain doll, and May Amelia was very excited. The only doll she ever had before was Susannah, her rag doll who she had since her 2nd birthday.
After that, some terrible things started to happen. Grandmother Patience became sick and came to live with the Jackson family. You might think that any grandmother is kind, sweet, loving, and patient, but Grandmother Patience isn’t. She would hit May Amelia with her metal-tipped cane when Amelia didn’t get her tea. One day when May Amelia doesn’t listen to her, Grandmother Patience smashed May’s porcelain doll with her cane.
Also May’s brother, Matti, is shanghaied, May’s mom has another baby girl, but then the baby dies shortly after a month. Amy Alice and Grandmother Patience blamed May Amelia for it, so May and Wilbert ran away to their aunt Alice’s house in Astoria. They stayed there all winter and some of the spring.
Eventually Papa came to pick them up because Scarlet Fever hit the Nasel Valley. May and Wilbert had to go home and they decided to stay home, because home is where the heart is.
