The Political Brain: The Role of Emotion in Deciding the Fate of the Nation...
08 September 2016
Why the heart rules in politics
I'm left of centre and ever-interested in politics. Like many who share my political leanings, I've been dismayed by the rise of Trump, the apparent irrationality of Britexit, and, in Australia, the resurgence of One Nation. 'Don't these people look at the evidence when casting their votes?' I ask myself. The answer according to Westen is that they don't. Nor for that matter do I. It seems that we are lead by our emotions when it comes to political decision making. And the scary thing is that people like me - who ponder political questions more than most - are even more beholden to our emotions than the average punter. Weston's book is a must read for anyone who laments rising political populism. He suggests some practical strategies for engaging with emotional decisions in politics, and gives enough theory for you to develop some of your own ideas. An easy read, that is perhaps a bit too US focused, but a definite one for the bookshelf for anyone interested in finding a way out of this political darkness that we seem to now be entering.
