The ESP8266 12F Super Node kit with AMS1117 power regulator kit is PERFECT!
The breakout 'super node' board for the ESP8266 12F is great because it is thin, small footprint, and it conveniently places important GPIO pins (GPIO0, GPIO2, ENABLE, etc.) next to important pins you need to use the ESP8266 such as VCC, GROUND, etc. This makes it very easy to add jumpers (included with kit) to the header pins (also included with kit) for programming. Also, there are SMD solder pads on the top of the 'super node' board to quickly and permanently tie the ENABLE pin to VCC with a small bit of solder.
The 'super node' board + ESP8266 12F give you the flexibility to prototype with jumper wires (included with kit), or permanently solder the header pins on the board in a custom PCB design.
The power AMS1117 power regulator board has a small footprint, and makes it easy to make prototype or custom PCB designs using a variable power source (about 5V to 10V input).
This kit is cheaper than most ESP-01 kits (per device) and also provides lots of flexibility with the number of GPIO pins on the ESP-12F (at the slight cost of a larger form factor).
Great kit for the money.
