Engaging and Engrossing
While the book does describe a number of the deaths that occurred on Doria dives, it is a completely engaging and engrossing narrative. You really gain a look into the wreck, the folks regularly diving it, the excitement of penetrating and finding artifacts, and the very real dangers the whole affair encompasses. Deep, cold water diving is not for amateurs or those not totally focused on the tasks. While tragic, each incident helps demonstrate that even highly experienced and completely capable divers can have things go bad, and how quickly they go from bad to worse.
As an avid diver, I couldn't put the book down. Having read other books about diving the Doria, I was familiar with many of the folks in Deep Descent, but this added a whole new view into what it takes to get out there, and what goes on once you're there. A great read for any diver.

Jerry Shine's Shore Diving Guide - New England
Great book for the regular New England shore diver. Solid info on each of the common dive sites in CT, RI, MA & ME - site details, directions, parking, facilities, optimal conditions. No details on what you'll see, but that's not what this book is really for - it takes your basic dive site list, and fleshes it out in terms of practical details. Obviously areas change over time, so what's listed in the book - especially with respect to facilities and parking - may not be accurate under current rules. A worthwhile purchase for me.

A Nice Intro to Wrecks
While a bit dated (which I expected when I bought it), the majority of the info in the book is still very valid and applicable to wreck diving today. Some of the equipment may have changed, but you should be reviewing proper equipment with an instructor, rather than just relying on a book anyway. As an avid diver, it's always interesting to me to read about how others have gone about learning, exploring and enjoying wrecks, and this book doesn't disappoint.
It's broken into logical sections, some of which can be skipped, if it's not an area that interests a particular reader. For example, if you don't plan on finding an as-yet undiscovered wreck, the chapters on research and hunting for it can be glossed over.
