Great movie, comparable soundtrack.
The first thing I checked before purchasing this item is that it was the actual score, and not 'music inspired by' the film. Once I was satisfied that it was I immediately checked online prices and purchased a copy. As soon as it arrived I popped it in the CD player and hoped it was as good as I remembered from the film.
It was.
And like any great score, there was quite a lot of music that blended so well with the action on the screen that it didn't catch my attention while watching the movie. This music was also great.
A film soundtrack is meant to tell and enhance the story on the screen through music and this one does so admirably. The composer, John Powell, has once again made a piece of music that masterfully brings you into the action. Quite often I was clearly able to picture the equivalent animation while listening to the music, especially during the tenth and eleventh tracks - my favorites.
The score runs the gamut from peaceful background noise, purely for ambiance, to rousing, toe-tapping crescendos that set the blood to racing. Powell seems to use every instrument in the book to accomplish this, and they blend well, with a bit of Nordic flair thrown in for effect. Superbly done, Sir!
As for the packaging of the CD, I was not disappointed there either. The cover art was beautiful, dark and evocative. The image behind the disc was a page from Hiccup's book in the movie, and very fitting. The booklet in the front flap of the jewel case holds a few pages of vibrant renderings from the film itself before listing the lyrics for the song which plays over the end credits (which apparently is Nordic - in part). The art on the disc itself was lighter in color and stylized in a Nordic manner, which was unexpected considering the jewel case design, but grew on me as time went on.
The back side of the case holds a distant view of Berk, the vikings' village, along with the obligatory credits and track list. Said list seems somewhat crammed into paragraph form on the top third of the picture, and in my opinion would have been better done vertically and in larger type for easier reading. That being said, it is rare for me to refer to a jewel case for a track list; instead I read the track titles on whatever media program or MP3 player I am using.
This brings me to my second complaint: the track titles. Instead of being titled "01 This is Berk", they are titled "01 How to Train Your Dragon~This is Berk". This means the last half of the track title - with the pertinent information - is cut off on the smaller screens of MP3 players or phones. Depending on what program you use, it either cuts off the last half entirely or scrolls exasperatingly slow from side to side. If you are unfamiliar with the disc or are better able to remember titles rather than numbers you are out of luck.
This is not the first disc I have had such troubles with, but it is one of the most annoying due to the long film title. Any media program or MP3 player worth its salt has the discography information embedded and if using a CD player, one could simply open it and check. Incorporating the film title into the track title is redundant and aggravating. Even using an abbreviation would have been preferable to the full title.
Ultimately this is an annoyance I am willing to accept, however, even if I have to try several tracks before finding the right one. I enjoy the other music along the way, and the music is what this is all about, is it not?
