US PRO Spark Plug Thread Reapir Kit M14 X 1.25 5868
23 July 2021
An effective repair after a fair amount of effort
I hesitated to buy this as the price is quite low and the were no instructions on line nor could I understand how it could work without a pilot drill, but it was for an otherwise dead lawnmower engine so I gave it a try The tool comes without instructions. I initially tried to use it with the head in place but was unable to apply enough pressure to cut a thread, so I took the head off and clamped it to a workbench. Essentially the tap wears away a cone shaped entry until eventually it starts to cut a thread. It took me around 30 minutes with a lot of pressure to complete, but the thread was apparently very clean and took an insert which I fixed with Loctite easily. The start cutters on the tap showed considerable wear so I’m not sure how great a life it will have but I’d guess it would be good for 3 or 4 more threads if need be Too soon to tell about insert life but I will use some anti seize to protect this – the plug may never need to come out again in the life of the engine
