Great playing of great music
Emanuelle Bertrand should be more widely known. She is a wonderful cellist with a huge range of colours in her tonal palette, and the works chosen for this 2-CD set display her abilities to a considerable extent.
From the gentle pathos of the Dutilleux 'Strophes' to the virtuosity of the works by Crumb and Kodaly, she shows herself to be equally at home in all genres and the splendid recording, in which you can almost feel the vibration of the cello strings, adds a warmth and presence to this magnificent playing.
I am a pianist, and much of my recorded library is of piano music. These discs have really made me re-think cello music, and I would really recommend anyone who likes music to go for this survey of the twentieth century.

Zizzo rocks
An excellent selection of Gershwin pieces, some played better than others. Zizzo is a great interpreter, especially in the longer pieces, but her sense of the rhythm lets her down in some of the preludes, where her rubato gets out of control. Nonetheless, these are idiomatic performances that do not replace, but stand along side, other worthy performances.

I will listen to this often, and will always be amazed and humbled.
Not for the faint-hearted, this 77-minute, single movement work is craggy, relentless, monolithic and magnificent. This version is the most complete on disc, and is beautifully recorded.
This is, perhaps, the music that should have accompanied films such as 2001, or Solaris (the original one) or even Gravity, so well does it convey the sheer immensity and emptiness of space, together with its aloofness and the irrelevance, and transience, of mere humanity. This is one of the 20th century's few masterpieces.
