Little more than eye candy
As something of a fan of the original Magic Knight Rayearth manga and anime series by CLAMP, its hard to judge the OVA on its own merits. Those hoping for a story that captures the spirit of the original will be sorely disappointed. The tone of the story is melancholic and often morbid. The characters presented are far removed from their lively manga and anime counterparts. While depressing characters can sometimes make for an interesting story, here they are flat and boring. The backdrop of the story is set in a Tokyo that has been magically depopulated to serve as the backdrop for a battle of mech-like spirit beasts. Some fans find this change intriguing given the fantasy setting of the Rayearth televised series. However, taken on its own, the setting really is quite generic, with nothing to truly separate it from any other movies involving giant robots and monsters fighting in Tokyo. What's presented of the plot makes little sense. This is made worse by the atrocious translation by Manga Entertainment. The script (both subtitles and the dub) has a overly literal translation to English with little or no attention paid to context. As a result, words like "barrier" are translated as "world," and denials and affirmative answers are commonly reversed. However, the OVA isn't entirely bad. The visuals are stunning, if a little dark. Giant robot fans will likely be impressed with the fight sequences. The music is impressive and consistent with the often eerie backdrop. So the resulting production is not terrible. It is forgettable. And far from good representation of CLAMP's work.

Definitely enjoyable, but worth the price?
Magic Knight Rayearth is an action adventure game for the Sega Saturn similar in its gameplay to Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past or the later Ys games, though a little more simplistic. As one of the final games to be released for the American Sega Saturn, and published by Working Designs, it's a true collectors item, but what of the game itself? The actual gameplay is average. A solid and simple hack and slash overhead adventure. In fact, gameplay may seem relatively slow-paced compared to games such as Ys V, though this isn't necessarily a bad thing. The first hours do become a little tedious. However, the game compensates by presenting legitimately challenging puzzles and mazes after the first two dungeons. The graphics are bright and colorful, the music is memorable, and the overall presentation of the world is on par with Link to the Past. The characters, both playable and background, present a lot of personality that players will either love or hate. Fans of the anime or manga series should note that though the game is based on them, the game consists almost entirely of original events. The three heroines have idiosyncrasies unique to the game and the game works as a stand alone story. In summary: the game is simple, though fun to play, and draws much of its strength from its charm. Some may dislike its lack of depth and scarcity of action based gameplay, but ultimately it's good points outweigh its flaws. How much one is willing to pay, unfortunately, may depend more upon its worth as a collectors item than the actual game.
