RUSSIAN CHURCH MUSIC HARMONIA MUNDI CD
I received a gift of some Harmonia-Mundi sampler CDs late last year and was absolutely blown away by the quality of the sound. Since then, I have been trying to find as many CDs on this label as I can, and the Russian Church music was one of those that I found on eBay. The chorus and director are first-rate and so is the choice of the selections. The listener gets the feeling of being transported to a Russian Orthodox Church. The acoustics in this recording venue are wonderful, and if you love the sound of a male chorus sing Russian music, you will love this CD. This is a recording that one could easily use to show off the music system playing it. Highly recommended!

It makes the music come alive.
I have owned this unit since 2006 when it replaced a McIntosh MCD 7000 whose laser had gone bad and for which a replacement was not available. I tried several supposedly "top of the line" units in my system on consignment, and none gave me the sound I knew and loved. I went back to the dealer to try the Three Tenors in Concert (Los Angeles) CD in this unit and instantly knew it was the unit for my system. The two tracks I played were Placido Domingo singing "Granada" followed by Luciano Pavarotti singing "Non ti Scordar di Me." It was the sound I was used to, and it was as if the tenors were right in the room. When I connected the unit into my system, the sound, if anything, was better than it had been in the audio store listening room. The music room in my home had been turned into a concert venue. What makes this unit particularly useful is its ability to play DVD-A, CD and SACD recordings. I have picked up a number of the hybrid RCA/BMG Living Stereo CDs, and this one plays the SACD layer with no problem, producing a sound very close to a super-clean copy of the original lp with none of the surface noise problems that often plagued those early pressings. I have a couple of DVD-A recordings - same thing. It also does very well with JVC XRCDs and Mobile Fidelity CDs. No matter what the format, if it is on disc, it is playable in this machine. I have not used it to play video recordings, but I feel it will do the job just as well. The only drawback for me, the reason I gave it 4 stars, is that the original laser failed after only 3 years, a time I consider very short but long enough for it to be out of warranty and a fairly hefty $300+ repair fee came out of my pocket to repair it. Denon was not willing to pick up any part of the cost of this repair. However, the sound I get from this unit is so good that I have been willing to let this go. I believe you will have to spend a LOT more money than I did to get a unit that does a better job of making the music come alive, and given the flexibility of this unit and its ability to do so many things so well, if you can this unit at a decent price, don't hesitate to buy it.

Harmonia Mundi Le Style Classique CD
I have been extremely impressed with all of the Harmonia Mundi CDs I have acquired. This one is no exception. I bought this CD based solely on the fact that it was on the Harmonia Mundi label. The sound on these CDs is almost always excellent and the performances often use original instruments or are of repertoire with which I was not familiar. This CD is volume 15 of a 20 volume CD compilation tracing music from antiquity to the music of today. An ambitious project to be sure. This CD is a highlights disc which includes selections from Gluck, Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven. While I was familiar with much of this music before, I was not familiar with all of it. As an example, Franz Joseph Haydn's symphonic work, particularly the late symphonies, is work I know, but THE SEASONS, the cello concerto and the string quartets are not so familiar to me. All are represented well on this recording and the performances are outstanding. The listener feels that he/she is in the concert venue where the works are being performed and as that listener, that is a critical element for me in enjoying the music. The other interesting thing in the time period represented (1775-1820) is how musical tastes changed in Europe. By the end of that time period, opera had begun to flourish and long religious works for large scale chorus and orchestra had diminished in popularity. Literally, the music changed to meet the needs of the audience, and the liner notes that accompanied this CD bring that out. I found nothing to dislike about this CD. Only one selection, the Mozart RONDO ALLA TURCA, did not measure up sonically. On several selections, I did have to adjust the premp volume control to maximize the differences in musical volume, but that happens a lot with compilations. I can listen to this disc at full volume when I want to concentrate on the music or as background music for relaxation or when I'm reading. Understand that this a disc that exemplfies musical styles and is a highlights CD, so virtually no work is complete. I have not compared selection against identical selection from other records or CDs and probably won't. I like this one for what it is - a showcase for the various genres 20 or so years on either side of the year 1800 and the development for what we know today as CLASSICAL music. Based on this CD, I am going to try to find the others in the series. This disc has made for interesting listening and I'd like to hear the others.
