Annie Get Your Gun

Betty as ANNIE - lavish but over the top.
Whether you enjoy this or not depends largely on your reaction to Betty Hutton in the title role. By the end, I was tired of her mugging. She sings well enough, but her acting is so corny and repetitious. At the time this film was made, there are little respect of native Americans, and some will find that objectionable, but that was the prevailing feeling of the time. The rest of the cast is fine, but things in the plot happen too quickly to be believable. The bonus features, like two musical numbers recorded by the woefully miscast Judy Garland, are really worthwhile.

Don't call this doctor!
I give up: I don't know what this is. Is it a joke? Is it someone's end-of-term film school project? Is it a vanity trip for the talentless people herein presented? Is it some deluded person's therapy project? Whatever it is, it's inept in every way. I suspect that some of the names in the credits were invented to protect the guilty. Supposedly, it's based on a novel, but then I've also heard that Porky Pig was based on J. Edgar Hoover. It's the kind of movie I'll put on when I want company to go home. I paid only a penny for it, but I was robbed!

Burn the Floor
If you go for glitz over content, this is for you. Van Last's choreography, in spite of the outstanding dancers doing it, is dull and repetitious. The camera work isn't bad for a dance concert, but the costumes are overdone and downright stupid. They do a dance version of Bizet's score to CARMEN like it was happening in outer space; from the wardrobe, it looks like each person has a million dollars to spend on an outfit but is hampered by a terminal case of bad taste. What the Fred Astaire number dancers wear is affronting to nostalgia. If Ginger Rogers ever wore clothes like this rubbish, she'd never have become a screen legend. Watch Ginger's clothes some time; they flowed, and they flowed with the music. The bonus feature might lead you to believe that this was a major hit with critics and audiences, but a healthy number of the critics dismissed it. Even local critics during its tour realized that making a mess with noise and glitter isn't really much of an accomplishment.
