Text book or Pleasure reading?
I purchased this book for a Literature class, but the book could easily be used for pleasure reading. The readings cover the time period from the Great Explorers (1500's) through the reconstructioni (1870's). Many of the "authors" are well known historical names, such as Christopher Columbus, John Smith, Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, Sojourner Truth, Edgan Allan Poe, Herman Melville, Fredrick Douglas, Abraham Lincoln, Walt Whitman, and others. The readings also shed great light on the history of America. This is a book I will keep when my class is finished so I can read more of it.

Understandable Grammar
Martha Kolln's book Rhetorical Grammar is an excellent study of the English language. Martha expertly lays out the structures of the language in an easy-to-understand fashion. She also offers enough information to keep even the experienced student engaged. Aside from the expected literal explanation of English, Martha delves into a philosophical approach. She acknowledges the constant evolution of language and the multi-angled viewpoint of what is considered "correct" English. This book has the ability to not only present the facts about the English language, but to expand the reader's thinking about language itself.
