Yet Another Basket Book? You Bet!!
I have seen Billie Ruth Sudduth's work and even attempted to weave one of her famous baskets. Because I live in North Carolina, I've even made several of her Carolina Snowflakes. So I decided to see what's up with this artist.
Ms. Sudduth's book is written just like her style of weaving. It is extremely well written and is quite precise. This book is eye candy for a weaver as well as an instructional manual. She gives several patterns but she also shows the work of several other artists to show how you can incorporate what techniques you've learned to do your own thing.
I highly recommend adding this book to your library section of basketry. You'll learn some new patterns and techniques, you'll learn a bit of history, and you'll learn why many of Billie Ruth Sudduth's baskets are found in museums around the world - including the Smithsonian!

Great Alternative for Waxed Linen
I ordered several different colors of this waxed thread to see if I would like it in place of a more expensive Irish waxed linen for weaving bracelets. I was very satisfied with the results of this thread. The various colors are quite vibrant which allows me more design potential with my bracelets, it performs well while constructing with it, and it's significantly less expensive. I am now also using it to lash my reed-woven baskets because it's so nice to work with.

Basketry
This is a wonderful book that every basket maker should have on hand. The photographs are wonderful, the directions are written very clearly, and the numerous patterns make this book an essential tool. The very basics are covered - tools needed, how to identify reed, different weaves, how and where to begin, etc. Patterns are then given starting with very easy and progressing to much more complicated. Each pattern lists what skills you should already have, what skills you will learn, and what materials and tools you will need. With 18 patterns to work through, there should be something for everyone in here. Additionally, the author has included several photographs of other baskets to illustrate examples of the topic she's covering which leaves the weaver with a bit of inspiration. I actually bought this copy as a present for my basket instructor!
Another very important part of this book is a section that shows you how to design your own market basket. Perhaps the most useful and used basket a person can own is a market basket and this chart shows you how to make the perfect size basket for whatever your need.
Whether you're a brand new beginner or a seasoned weaver, I highly recommend purchasing this book. If your budget only allows for one book - let it be this one!
Happy weaving...
