Great transfer...but it's hard to tell.

This was the first Blu-Ray I purchased after buying a PS3, and I have mixed feelings about it. First, let me say that technically, there is nothing wrong with the picture quality, and that this does look substantially better than the DVD. Having said that, I will tell you that this is NOT a good Blu-Ray to show off your HDTV with. The reason for this is simple: almost the entire movie happens in nighttime scenes with a blue cast to them. This is an artistic choice, and it fits the mood of the movie perfectly, however it also makes detail much harder to see. I'd certainly recommend it to fans of the movie, but the darkness of the film makes it poor demo material compared to something like X-men 3 or Stealth.

So...this is High Def...right? The package says so...

The movie itself isn't great but has a few really funny moments. I got this FREE with my PS3. Thank goodness, because the quality of this Blu-Ray is horrible. I literally have DVDs that look better in 480p than this BD does in 1080i. I'm puzzled as to why Sony would pack this into the first batch of PS3s when it does absolutely nothing to make high-def look like high def. They should have used Stealth. Avoid this at all costs. I sold mine, it's not worth having in my collection, even for free.

Another great transfer from Fox!

I tell you, after watching X-Men 3 and now this, I have to say that other movie studios need to use the same technology Fox does when preparing their Blu-Ray releases. It's possible that both these movies look so good simply because they were both filmed fairly recently, but whatever the reason, this version of AVP looks wonderful. At any point, you can freeze frame and the picture is crystal clear, without the slightest hint of film grain or digital artifacts. The detail level is superb thoughout the movie, and shows you what HD can really look like. The sound is above average as well. An underrated Blu-Ray, although I know the movie itself got mixed reviews. I like it.
