Fabulous guitar, great price, 100% recommended daily dose of vitamin cool !
The Gretsch 6120 Chet Atkins electric guitar my dad and I would talk about. We called it the "cadillac" of electric guitars. He used to say "some day I'm going buy one of those for you." Well that day has come and I bought it myself. Thanks for the idea dad!
I've owned a lot of guitars over the years. Playing professionally since 13 years(41 years) there are a lot of guitars to try out and I have. As of today I'm thinking this Gretsch 6120 was one of the best purchases made. Not only did I get a fantastic price on Ebay but the upgrades I wanted were also already there, TV Jones pickups and Spritzer tuners.
At first I wanted a Brian Selzter black "Hot Rod" 6120. I still think I may pick up one. But the burnt orange 6120 finish has really grown on me and I'm liken it. Playing everything from Rockabilly to Be Boop this guitar has a wonderful voice. Being a big fan of Chet of course I found his sound was right there on this axe, but I also found Charlie Christian, Johnny Cash and of course Brian Seltser.
This Ebay purchase guitar did not arrive in prefect condition, there does appear to be a problem with the tone selector switch on the "dark" upper setting. I'm cool with repairing it considering how much I saved at the price purchased.
I found there are 100s of aftermarket pickguards for the 6120 guitar. Everything from hot rods and girls to cowboys and crosses. No doubt I will try one out. It reminds me of how much fun my friends had together racing our hot rods on "J" street in Sacramento in the early 70s. My buddy Steve in a 57' Belaire and me in a 64' GTO. What a blast. I matched this fabulous looking 6120 it with a 65' Fender reissue "Princeton Reverb" in the same Orange tolex as the 6120 guitar. They look and sound fabulous together.
As mentioned I've owned a lot of guitars over 41 years playing. In comparison to others I've owned the 6120 stays in tune with the Sprtizer tuners and Bigsby tail piece. My first guitar a 64' Gibson SG special with humbuckers had this wammy bar that would never stay in tune not matter what. Even my Fender strat with locking tunners would not stay in tune like this Gretsch 6120. My jazz guitars owned have been: 63' Gibson Es 330, 78' Gibson Es 165, 52' Gibson L50, 96' Ibanez PM20 Pat Methaney, 96' Gibson Es 333 Blonde to just name a few. All of them fantastic guitars in their own way. This Gretsch has more character than all of them. I can find what I'm feeling in the pickup combinations and the neck is really fantastic, smooth and fast. There really is no "One Guitar" to have. I think most players want them all. Being realistic each player finds the best combo they can afford.
Special note: Buying a guitar like a 6120 on Ebay requires more than faith in the seller. Feedback is really important but so is communication. Is the seller willing to email and talk prior to purchase is an important factor if buying fomr an indiependent seller. I usually make purchases like this from an Ebay store who has many transactions for feedback. Even so I've only had a couple of times buying on Ebay since 2000' where the seller really did not deliver what was described. So Ebay is for me a fantastic place to buy guitars. I would have had to drive for days to find this model 6120 I wanted. Taking the Ebay leap of faith and doing my homework prior to buying now I'm playing one fine used guitar purchased way less than at retail and looking cooler at the same time. :)
