For a HRM to count calories, get a Polar. If you want GPS, get Garmin.
Few things I'm disappointed about. 1. the heart rate monitor is NOT compatible with the cardio equipment at my gym. We have Lifestyle treadmills and bikes, Cybex ArcTrainers, and Procor ellipticals. Pretty basic and none of these machines read heart rate. 2. AND THIS IS MY BIGGEST COMPLAINT! The calorie calculation is WAY off. Prior to owning this HRM, I've used a Polar F11 for about 4+ years. It was so beat up, it was time for a replacement. On an hour run I cover about 7miles. During that run, my heart rate averages about 155. My Polar would record 800-900 calories burned. This Garmin 405CX reads about 550. It's disgustingly low compared to what I'm used to seeing, depressing and discouraging. However, I do really like the Garmin Connect that uploads after every workout to Garmin's website showing heart rate, distance, pace, and a map if applicable. I'll be watching Polar for better GPS tracking with their HRMs. Put my Polar on a map and uploaded to a user dashboard similar to Garmin Connect and I'd be a happy camper. My #1 reason for choosing this Garmin model was to record calories and it does that very poorly. I'd return it if I could and invest in a new Polar instead.
