G&L Will Ray Tribute guitar
This a review on a G&L Tribute Will Ray guitar. The Tribute model is a cheaper import version of the American made Will Ray Signature model. I bought this guitar becaused I already owned a Fender Nashville B Bender Telecaster. A lovely guitar, but one, with which I had a few issues. The Fender is really heavy (9lbs). To operate the B Bender (Parson/Green type), you have to pull the guitar down and the front strap button actives a series of rods to increase the tension on the 2nd string. As you can imagine, with th weight of the guitar, this gets a bit tiring on stage after a while. Also, I find that the top strings sound over bright and thin. For my my fingers, the frets are also a bit shallow. After reading several reviews of the G&L model, it seemed to rectify all my issues with the Telecaster. The G&L is semi-hollow, making it lighter than the Fender (around 7.7lbs) The B bender is a standard Hipshot which is activated by tilting the guitar forwards rather than down, so it doesn't exasperate any weight problems. Both B Benders take a while to get used to. I find the Hipshot a bit clumbsier to operate than the Parsons/Green, but maybe that's ufair as I've had 4 yeras to get used to the Fender. The pickups on the G&L are noise-cancelling single coil types, but they incorporate ceramic magnets as opposed to the alnico magnets on the Telecaster. They sound half way between magnetic and piezo, with a greater frequency response and dynamics compared with more trditional electric guitar pickups. The top strings sound smooter than on the Tele (which is what I was after) but the lower strings sound more like an amped up acoustic than an electric, with a broad sound rather than the focused sound of the Fender. I can't say if tis is better or worse, just different! The frets are alot chunkier on the G&L compared with the Fender - almost too chunky (height-wise). At least I could get them dressed if I feel it's a problem. One problem I've had with the G&L is the notes on frets 1-7 of most of the strings were slightly sharp! Even with intonation adjustment, I couldn't get accurate tuning all the way up the neck. (With th Hipshot unit in place it's actually quite awkward to get to the intonation screws at the back of the bridge.) I decided to buy a compensating nut by Earvana (also via ebay) and this seems to have rectified that issue quie nicely. So in conclusion, I bought the G&L with the hope that I would like it more than my Fender, and yes I do in most respects. It's lighter, less ear-cutting on the top strings and the neck/frets are more to my liking. As to whether I will sell my Fender on, only time will tell.

Expensive for what it is, but it works.
Heavy duty 25m cable just fitted ok. The material seems a bit flimsy, but that actually allows you to poke the cable end connector through to keep it from unraveling. Convenient, so you don't have to use your forearm to wrap up a wet/dirty cable!
