Ka-Bar Mk1 USN
3 of 4 found this helpful So the way I see it, the Mk1 has two obvious aspects that a potential buyer would consider. The first is value. If you strip away everything else, there aren’t a lot of other options for an American made blade, of 1095 (or similar), this size and at this price. There are some, but I think that is where the second aspect comes in. There are other more modern looking options, and there are a few other classic military style for even less money, but the full flat grind is the differentiating feature in my view. Most classic military style knives, including those from Ka-Bar, have relatively low saber grinds which do make for a strong knife, and a perfectly functional multi-purpose knife. But, if you’re looking to put the blade in hunting and other outdoor roles, then you might be interested in the full flat grind. It really is a straight up outdoors knife, dressed up like a classic military blade (even though it actually is a classic military blade) and this makes it an often overlooked option for hunters and woodsmen. It feels the right size, which is to say that it’s not too big, and it’s very well made. It comes with a nicely assembled, and fully functional leather sheath, which strikes a nice balance between useful, but not so nice that you feel like you paid extra just to get it. This is the game when it comes to sheaths. The company has to absolutely nail the sheath and that means charging for it. If I feel like a lot of the price tag went into the sheath, I expect it to be excellent. Alternatively, a functional sheath that’s simple, well made, and doesn’t weigh down the cost, is a tough thing to do right. It’s really for people who just need something to cover the blade and don’t care much what it looks like, and frequently it’s the first thing most of us throw away. The Mk1 sheath manages to get beyond that, and at the same time the whole package remains a terrific value. I came to the Mk1 unimpressed by Scandi grinds on anything other than the thinnest blade, looking for something classic, American made, with simple, proven steel, at an attractive price. With those requirements, the Ka-Bar Mk1 has got to be among the best choices available right now.

It's OK but doesn't make a lot of sense
The thing seems well enough made to me. The tolerances on the castle nut wrench are pretty loose, the 3/8ths drive hole seems pointless, but those things aren't really a big deal. Not having the teeth to remove a milspec barrel nut is the killer in my view. If the concept is to have a basic wrench that addresses the most vital jobs of AR building, this seems like a big misstep. About the only real reason to get an armorer's wrench is to remove milspec barrel nuts and the two little pins included on this wrench are nowhere near sufficient to remove one from a rifle that's been shot quite a bit or torqued to death as some factories seem to love to do. If all you want to do is properly torque your castle nut or flash hider, then it'll work, but it's not exactly a compact tool that covers all the major bases.
