A Story for Our Times That Needs to Be Read & Shared
I read "The Journey" as part of a reading assignment for the library I work at, but even though I have read many, many other picture books for kids, this story has stuck with me for over a year. So I decided to buy a copy for myself.
The story is based on several refugee stories collected by an Italian worker at a refugee center in that country. She compiled the stories told to her and produced this book, which shows in understandable terms for kids and adults alike what it is to be a refugee--having to abandon friends, family and home (and even the family cat) to escape from warfare after her husband is killed (the husband, by the way, was not a soldier or combatant, just a bystander who was in the wrong place at the wrong time.) The mother and her two small kids flee by hitching rides, by crossing rough and dangerous terrain on foot, and sailing on a boat to what will hopefully be a new life for them. Along the way they encounter many fears and dangers and hostile people. Though we never really know at the end of the story whether they will succeed in making a new life for themselves, at least they are safe for the moment.
In an age when refugees are being characterized as "dangerous" or somehow less than human, and many people think they do not deserve help, this story about the woman and her two children bring an understanding of the refugee crisis that kids need to be made aware of.

Good value blue fabric
Cloth easy to work with, i.e. cutting and sewing. Heavier than broadcloth but not as heavy as twill. Would work really well for skirts, pants, jumpers.

Great soundtrack & great seller!
I ran across tracks from this CD while listening to my local public radio station. I had seen the movie years ago but had forgotten how beautiful and moving the soundtrack was. When I heard it again, I decided to buy a copy. After I purchased this CD, the seller had it in the mail ASAP and I had it within just a few days. I highly recommend both the CD itself as well as the seller. :-)
