Souls on Fire : Portraits and Legends of Hasidic Masters by Elie Wiesel

    Great stories
I am an avid reader of Hasidic stories, whether in Hebrew, Yiddish or English. Mr. Wiesel RIP tells many excellent ones. The background he provides is invaluable, even for those of us who were personally acquainted with many Holocaust survivors. It will enhance your appreciation for and understanding of the stories told. However, I think that many of the psychological and theological conclusions he draws are unfounded and some outright wrong. I don’t know if he changed his mind in the decades following the books first appearance. Nonetheless, it’s worth buying, reading and re-reading.

    A “Soldier’s” Story
That he considered himself a soldier and not a general is in itself a lesson in humility that we can learn from. And it’s the attitude that runs throughout the book.
