Nice level of detail
This is basically a starter set loco, but it has the enhanced connecting rod and valve gear detail that most of the other 0-8-0s lack. The control system works great, including the LionChief hand-held and the Bluetooth connections to the Lionel app on my Android phone. I gave this a thumbs up for durability but the construction is pretty lightweight and I suspect it would be prone to damage if handled carelessly. The wireless connection to the tender is a nice feature, but the tender rides pretty far from the loco. So far I have only pulled 6-7 car trains and the single traction tire may be a limiting factor. The sound system is a little weak and I have not tried the smoke unit. All told I like it and for the $150 I paid it was a good deal.

Great graphics and lighting, so-so sound
This is the starter-set version of the Lionchief (not LC Plus) GP-38 diesel. Besides its included remote you can run it from your smartphone using the free Lionchief app and Bluetooth. Sound pitch and volume and speed limit are customizable via the app only. The graphics are outstanding compared to Lionel GP-38s of say five years ago. The directional all-LED lighting is very good and bright. Pulling power with the truck-mounted can motors is OK; I pulled a consist of 19 Lionel freight cars, most with metal trucks with no problem.
Since this a starter-set engine there is a reduced feature set:
- No smoke
- No coil couplers
- Trucks sides and fuel tank are plastic
- Prime mover sound isn't up to the LC+ separate sale diesels
- Jerky start for a dead stop; smooth once moving
- Must run via remote or phone, no conventional control
- Overall feeling is a bit lightweight
With all that I think its a good value and I recommend it.

Graphics Lacking
1 of 1 found this helpful This is a nice loco for the money. Has LionChief and Bluetooth control. The Chessie System is a great color scheme and logo, but I was disappointed in the graphics. Lionel cheaped out here and omitted all the little detail graphics like the high voltage warning, the flag, etc. Compare this one to the CSX 2705, another GP38, and you'll see what I mean.
