Dirty New Zealanders
Bret and Jemaine are two 'novelty' musicians trying to make it big in New York with the help of Murray, their moonlighting manager from the New Zealand consulate, and Mel, the obsessive fan who provides 100% of their following. Throughout the 12 episodes (across 2 dvds) the pair tackle issues such as jealousy, self-esteem, racism and how far good intentions can often lead to unintended consequences. These themes are all addressed in a range of musical styles, the pair seemingly adept at parodying a vast range of influences from Bowie to Hip-Hop. With each episode featuring one or two core songs based on the developing narrative one might expect these musical deviations to become tiresome after two or three episodes, but the consistent quality of lyrics and production mean that the songs can stand alone as pieces of comedic and artistic brilliance. The lean but strong supporting cast of characters, clever writing, and obviously high levels of audiovisual production, make sure that the comedic and musical abilities of the two stars are able to shine. One may have to give it time to be fully drawn into the same blocks of New York that the Conchords inhabit, but once there you will not want to leave, and the end of each episode will find you wanting to lose yourself again.
