Trieste mia, che nostalgia che son lontan de ti.
For a Triestino who was a child in Trieste while Morris was an English soldier, this was a really nostalgic trip for me recalling the places of my childhood. On the negative side I well remember the British soldiers wandering the streets ,drunk out of their skulls on the cheap wine of the Osterie, being rounded up by Redcaps swinging their truncheons and loading them into the backs of Jeeps. The Americans equally behaved like pigs but they were less aggressive while drunk and less violent than the Brits, in any case, their shore patrols did nothing
.My family were Hapsburg civil servants for generations so the Imperial Trieste also resonated with me, and there was Joyce who at one time lived in an apartment building not far from my house in Via Boccaccio , behind the Railway station and goods yards.
With the loss of Istria , living in Trieste was live selling the house but continuing to live in the kitchen.
Morris sensitively captures the feeling, the spirit of the place its way of life, we are 'Italiani per un filo' by a thread and if Churchill had his way, Trieste would have been ceded to Yugoslavia!!! Another cazzata by the 'great man'.
My family(,mother ,father 4 year old brother and me aged10) left from the Molo Audace in 1955 and migrated to Adelaide, best move my father ever made, stubbornly resisted by my mother who wept all the way to Australia and then some more. I visited Trieste a few years ago to coincide with the 50th Anniversary of the city being finally a part of Italy again. i felt as if i had never left, nothing had changed, it was the unspoiled place of my childhood, as it was the unspoiled place of Morris' youth, feelings that are captured exactly. Bravo
