Obscure gem.
The plot is this: a man falls in love with an older woman who is not interested in romance. She gives him a fake phone number, but he searches for her to win her love.
The "plot" is extremely thin and we do not really get to know who the characters are (save for some sex-positive feminist monologues by the female lead), but the pacing is solid and the unsimulated sex scenes flow nicely and don't seem out of place.
The music is unusually good for this type of film. My only complaint is the atrocious dubbing, but it's to be expected for such an obscure film.

VERY underrated anime!
Mardock Scramble is like a darker and more psychological Ghost In The Shell. The two main characters are very sympathetic and even the two villains are not as un-redeemable as they are made in this firs installment. This film does not beat around the bush as far as its subject matter is concerned -- rape, incest, and teen prostitution -- but it is in no way glorified and essential to the protaganist's character development.
The art style is wonderful and the voice acting is phenomonal, at least in the Japanese version (I have not watched it with the English dub). My only complaint is that the cliffhanger is rather sudden -- it was clear this was meant to be a single three hour film. Be sure to get the other two installments -- The Second Combustion and The Third Exhaust.
